I don’t write poetry – A poem

I don’t write poetry take 3 pp slide 1I wrote the story behind I don’t write poetry here. What was supposed to be a simple poem turned into a few days long struggle whose end result I trashed and then changed my mind about it. Here are those rescued verses.

I don’t write poetry
By Ada Ireland

I don’t write poetry … I don’t know how.
I know very little of rhyme and rhythm,
Of intonation and iambic pentameter,
And, frankly, I don’t care to learn more.
Too many rules
Which get in the way
Of what I really feel
And what I really want to say.

No, I don’t know how to write poetry,
But I know the taste and feel of every inch of your skin,
I know the strength of your hugs,
The sound of your rare, unguarded laughs,
And the site of your secret (now gone) piercing.
I know each line and dot of your tattoo,
The intoxicating scent that is unique to you,
I know the way you tense when your limits are tested,
And the barely audible grunts you make when you’re frustrated.
Blindfold me and I would still be able to pick you out of a crowd.
… Yes, I know you.

I don’t know how to write poetry,
But I know your touch and its power to strip me of all inhibitions,
Of pride, vanity, fear, and yes, even morals.
I know how it feels to be bare at your feet,
Vulnerable, yet protected,
Belonging to you, yet completely free.

I don’t know how to write poetry,
Its rules are too dry and restrictive for me.
But you? You’re completely different.
You shatter all limits,
You take away all reason and rhyme.
You allow no ignorance,
No hiding, no pretending.
You put me on a roller coaster
Between emotional heaven and emotional hell
And show me what life and love really are.
You break the fake me and help me discover what I am truly made of.
You give me the pain and tears I thought I was smart enough to avoid,
The passion I thought I was too cynical to believe in,
And the mind-numbing pleasure I thought I was too cold for.
You’re constantly teaching me something,
And I soak it all up, then crave even more.

I don’t write poetry,
I don’t know how and I don’t care to learn it.
Instead, I write what moves my mind, my body, and my spirit.

I don’t write poetry.
I write you.
