Yesterday, I read the poem I always knew by Rod McKuen. According to his website, it’s one of his few unpublished poems. I liked it. By the time I finished the second verse, I already had an idea for a poem of my own. Mine had a completely different message though!
I always knew
By Ada Ireland
I always knew you’d never come.
I knew there was no way that any combination
Of flesh and blood, of wit and soul,
Could make me lose my mind and take away my heart.I am a person ruled by reason,
I always knew you’d never come!I always knew you’d never come.
I didn’t waste my time looking for you in anyone around me,
I didn’t hope to find you in any corner of my real world,
Platonic love and friendship were all that I expected.Romantic love is just for crazy dreamers. I’m sane that way,
And so I always knew you’d never come!I always knew you’d never come.
I looked for love and passion in poems and in made up stories,
But then I closed my books, put them away,
And carried on with real life.I knew that all consuming love was just for fairy tales,
So, yes, I always knew you’d never come!I always knew you’d never come.
And even though a part of me bemoaned the lack of passion,
The rest of me looked at the bright side:
I’d never have a broken heart.I always knew you’d never come,
Until one day you spoke,
You laughed,
You touched me,
And everything I knew just fled my mind. What did I always know?
Foolish me. It doesn’t even matter,
Because you came. You’re here now …
I’ll always know that you have come!
P.S. I’m not a poet. Please don’t expect to find any reason or rules in my amateurish rhyme. I disregard any constrictions imposed by form too. I just write.
