Don’t blame the fire – A poem

she wanted to be burnt

Don’t blame the fire
By Ada Ireland

Don’t blame the fire for getting hurt.
It never moved an inch towards you.
You were the one getting close to it,
Adding more fuel to see
How bright you could make it.
Then you laughed at the flames
And jumped right in,
Into a crazy dance of passion and heat.
You knew you’d get burnt,
But … isn’t that what you wanted?

Don’t blame the fire for getting hurt,
And don’t think I’m fooled by your sobbing,
I know your pain is real,
I know your tears aren’t fake,
But I also know the true reason for your crying:
It’s not that you got burnt,
It’s that you fell in love with the heat,
The brilliance, the soul-consuming intensity,
And you want it back.
All of it.
You crazy girl,
You didn’t learn to fear the fire,
Instead you learned to crave it …

You are in love.
