A Lesser Fool – Another blurted poem

the first job of a writerI was reading a collection of love poems and I came across The Triple Fool by John Donne (1572 – 1631). I didn’t understand it all, but I liked the first three verses a lot. They gave me an idea for another “blurted poem” (the kind you write in a matter of minutes and don’t take the time to edit). According to Ray Bradbury, that makes you an honest writer. If I can’t be a good writer, I can at least be an honest one.

A lesser fool
By Ada Ireland

I was thrice the fool, there is no doubt,
First for loving, second for saying so
In dirty prose and whining poetry,
And third for hoping that it would mean enough.

I’m not done shedding tears over the need I have of you,
I’m not done folding in pain over the way I crave your body and your mind,
I’m not done kneeling to crush the emptiness that’s left in me,
But I’m done hoping. I’m only twice the fool now.

I let myself remember things you said to me,
I let myself recall the feel and scent of you,
I close my eyes and feel your quiet power take a hold of me.
I’m not done hoping, after all. I’ll never be a lesser fool…

Depressing? Sorry. My novels are not this broody. I even have some jokes in there. I can’t promise they are any good though: the novels or the jokes! :-)

Now let me find something that’s actually funny.
